4 Months of Craziness – Time for Another Update

I can’t believe that it has been 4 months of craziness since we started this thing. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and while not every minute has been fun, I can say that overall the experience has been a blast. A huge shout out and thanks to Ed from Ed’s Gym for all he has done to push me and keep me moving forward. Big thanks also to Julie and the kiddos for the motivation and support and for putting up with some of the not-so-stellar days. And to everyone reading the blog and engaging on Facebook and Twitter. So many of you have shared encouraging words and your own updates. It’s been great knowing that some of you are also taking on your own crazy ideas.

So, here’s the down and dirty. A report on the progress since Jan 8.  (You can also check out the 30 day and 60 day comparisons)

Waist at umbillicus: Day 1: 48.75, Day 120: 40.5, Difference -8.25 inches

Hips: Day 1: 42.5, Day 120: 41.5, Difference -1 inches

Chest: Day 1: 47, Day 120: 42.75, Difference -4.25 inches

Around Shoulders: Day 1: 54, Day 120: 48.5, Difference -5.5 inches

Mid Thigh: Day 1: 23.25, Day 120: 23, Difference -.25 inches

Bicep: Day 1: 15, Day 120: 13.5, Difference -1.5 inches

Neck: Day 1: 17.75, Day 120: 16.25, Difference -1.5 inch

That’s a grand total of 22 inches lost in 120 days.

When I stepped on the scales Day 1 I weighed in at 263.8 pounds, today I stepped on the scales and weighed in at 223.4. I’ve lost 40.4 pounds in 120 days.

I can’t believe how much better I’m feeling and how much more energy I have. As I mentioned last week in a post, I feel like I’ve hit a bit of a plateau with the weight loss. Time to keep my eyes on the long term goals and keep at it.

The Craziness Continues – An Update on Jeff’s Crazy Idea

Running with Gadgets (I left the Scissors in the drawer)

If you know me at all, you know I love my tech gadgets. And as I started to run a couple weeks ago I started looking around for things that would make my runs a little more enjoyable and also help me keep track of distance and times. I didn’t have to look far to find some great tech solutions. Here are a few of my finds so you too can start running with gadgets.

Nike+ GPS

I have an iPhone 4s and my first tech option was to look for some apps that I could just download and that would be easy to use. I found the Nike+ GPS app on iTunes and after a quick review and some Twitter confirmations, I decided it was just what I needed. After creating a profile, it allows me to track my miles, time splits and will keep track of where I run with the GPS mapping option. It syncs with the Nike+ website and even allows me to create goals, set up a training program for anything from a beginning runner (me) to training for a marathon (I’ll get there eventually). I can even connect and compete against my friends.  The app works great and even integrates with iTunes to allow me to listen to a playlist when I run and create power songs to help motivate me when the running gets tough. One of the best features – it works on a treadmill. The GPS function doesn’t do much, but the app does a pretty good job at calculating how far you’ve run, even inside. And if the numbers are a little off (which I’ve found them to be by  a few tenths of a mile), it let’s you calibrate by entering the information manually from the treadmill readings. Getting Fit for the Right Running Shoe

As I was preparing to start running I talked to several people and stopped by The Colorado Running Company to find out about what I needed to do to find the right running shoe. In the past I would have headed to one of the sporting goods chain stores and found a pair of shoes that fit and been done with it. But Ed wanted me to look at minimalist shoes, and back in January I had met John from the Colorado Running Company when I stopped in to pick up my 26.2 sticker. He suggested that when I was ready to run, I should come back for a fitting. Perfect. So last week I stopped by the store and the search for the right running shoe began. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I was a little intimidated. Running was new to me and the staff had a lot of experience, but my hesitation was for naught. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Their goal wasn’t to just get me out the door with the gear I needed, but to take the opportunity to teach me about the gear, how I run and share from their experience. It was fantastic and I learned a lot.

60 Days – Over 30 pounds and 13 inches

It’s really hard to believe that I am 60 days into this crazy idea I had about getting in shape and making some huge lifestyle changes, but I am. First, a huge thanks to everyone who has helped along the way. Julie and the kids, Ed at Ed’s Gym and everyone who works out there with me, and everyone who has read, commented and shared here on the blog and on all the social media platforms, your support has kept me going on the days I didn’t want to go to the gym and wanted to eat junk.

I’m making progress towards my goals and wanted to give everyone an update on where I am 60 days in. Here is a comparison between day one and today. If you want the 30 day comparison you can find it here.

Waist at umbillicus: Day 1: 48.75, Day 60: 43.75, Difference -5 inches

Hips: Day 1: 42.5, Day 60: 41, Difference -1.5 inches

I’m really excited about the progress I’m making – not only are the numbers dropping, but I’m feeling better and better and getting stronger. I’ve almost reached my weight goal to start running. Hopefully, I’ll be there in a couple of weeks.

Your Job Makes You Fat

I came across this infographic about how your job makes you fat yesterday and thought it was worth sharing based on the journey I’m on with this crazy idea. The time spent at a desk over a period of years and a lack of physical activity  are what led to me getting to the point where I was tired of being out of shape and decided to do something about it. For most people, there’s not a whole lot you can do about being at a desk, and I still spend the better part of my day in front of a computer. However, there is something you can do about the physical activity part. I’m so thankful for Ed’s Gym, and the coaching Ed has provided not only for my fitness, but also for the nutrition piece of my plan. If you’re here in Colorado Springs and your ready to get up and get moving, I can’t recommend Ed’s Gym highly enough. So step away from the keyboard and go do something.

A Number I Haven’t Seen For 12 Years

I’m approaching 60 days into this crazy idea and I can’t wait to do a full update on new measurements and progress. The past few weeks have been a little crazy. Due to travel and sickness I missed several workouts at Ed’s Gym, but this week I have been able to get back into the swing of things. But I’m back in the gym this week and it feels great. I hit a milestone this morning and just had to share it before we hit the 60 day mark. When I stepped on the scales this morning I hit a number I’ve been waiting for. It wasn’t a huge number, but it was a number I hadn’t seen for 12 years. I’m not telling you what that number is – it’s to close to the 60 day mark, but I was really excited. Instead, I want to share a photo I posted on Facebook last week that received a few comments and a photo from last fall.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sometimes you don’t see the changes day to day, and it can get frustrating. When you don’t see the immediate changes you wonder if it is worth it, you wonder if change is really happening. Sometimes it’s nice look back a little further and see the progress. I’m getting close to my goal for 60 days and the target weight I set to start doing some running. It looks like that 5K is getting closer and closer. I need to pick one in the next couple of weeks.

Setback or Slingshot?


I’ve missed every workout this week. I don’t like it. Over the weekend I started getting sick, and it progressively got worse all week causing me to not be able to get to Ed’s Gym at all. It’s a setback in the push to reach my goals. Part of me is really frustrated, thinking I should have tried to push through to get to the gym despite not feeling well. Part of me knows that my body needs the rest and that in the long run, taking time to recover will be better than pushing through and possibly getting sicker. It still doesn’t make it any easier. It does make me more determined to get back at it next week and make up for some lost ground. I choose to use this as a slingshot to propel me toward the goal rather than something to keep me from moving forward.

Workout – A quick look at what I’m doing at Ed’s Gym

It was good to get back in the gym this week after our Seattle trip and the cheeseburger experiment. I shot a time lapse of what a hour long workout at Ed’s looks like and shrunk it down to less than 30 seconds. The camera was in the corner, so some of the shots are a little far away, but you’ll still get a feel for it. One of the things I love about Ed’s Gym is that it isn’t about the fancy equipment. There is definitely a minimilast feel. It’s just you, Ed, some simple gear and hard work.

 

Workouts like this four times a week and the nutrition plan Ed has me on have allowed me to lose 23 pounds since Jan 8. I haven’t felt this good in years and can’t wait to see where I am at the 60 day mark.
