Where Did My Allergies Go?

We are right in the middle of spring allergy season and after three months of eating a pretty exclusive paleo diet and one thing is missing for me…

The sneezing.

I have been plagued with terrible seasonal and environmental allergies—My.Whole.Life. My childhood was filled with allergy shots, skin prick tests, doctor visits and Kleenex.

I started to notice a major change one week into the Whole 30.

I could breathe.

Eliminating dairy, gluten and highly processed foods from my diet has also eliminated my allergies. What took Jeff so long to get crazy? Who knew that his crazy idea would make me feel so much better as well?

I am still cautiously optimistic heading into grass season—my biggest allergen. We will see. But I told you I would keep you posted.

I know so many folks that battle with the sniffing, sneezing, and dripping of allergies. Seriously, try eating Paleo for 30 days . You can always go back to how you were eating before. But the energy explosion and health benefits you get from an allergy free life will make it hard to go back.

I promise.

When you eat junk, you feel like junk

When you eat junk, you feel like junk. Pretty simple really, but sometimes I can be a little slow. Since we finished the  Whole 30 we have been primarily sticking with a paleo style diet, but we have tried adding some non-paleo items into our meals to see how we react. Not that we didn’t already have a good idea of how some of the foods would affect us, but sometimes experience is the best teacher.

So we tried them. Bread, mostly in the form of buns is the biggest culprit. Surely that won’t be that bad. Wrong. We’ve tried it in different forms and always get the same result. We enjoy it while we are eating it, but within a matter of a couple hours we feel it. Grumblings in the belly, followed by a total crash. No energy and a desire to go to bed by 8:00 pm. We tried it again on Friday — not sure why honestly. But it was convenient and easy. Same action = same results. We got it. We get it! When you eat junk you feel like junk. Lesson learned – again.

Julie and I have been talking about doing another Whole 30 because we were feeling so much better right after the first one, and because the second one won’t be nearly as hard since we have stuck to a mostly clean diet (except for the few experiments). Anyone want to join us on this next one?

No Leftover Paleo Chicken Soup

Well, we are almost two weeks post Whole 30 and our family is still sticking to our new paleo life-style pretty well. We have opted for some organic low sugar salad dressing options—mainly so Jeff will still continue to eat salad (he swore off balsamic vinegar and oil completely after having it so much on the Whole 30). So you could say we are all about making healthy compromises right now. For me it is having white potatoes every couple of weeks.

Here is a recipe based on a Paleo chicken soup I found in the Paleo Comfort Foods cookbook. I tweaked it just a bit to make it a little more family friendly. This soup has become a huge hit! The kids love it and it is a great option for cold, Colorado evenings.  And I love it because I get to use bacon grease! I thought it would be really hard to eat chicken soup without noodles, but you know what, this is so tasty you don’t even miss them. I increased the amount of chicken called for in the original recipe to give it some bulk, so that we feel full after eating it. [Read more...]

On The Road Post Whole 30

We finished up our Whole 30 last Monday and on Wednesday Julie and I had a trip to Seattle for a full day training we were giving for a group of non-profit leaders in the Northwest. We knew it would be a bit of a challenge to keep to our post Whole 30 diet and we packed some snacks to help us out. In our planning, we decided to stick to our diet for the most part, but that after the training we would allow ourselves to have something we hadn’t had for a while.

We had some time after we landed in Seattle before we could check into our hotel so we hopped in the car and headed downtown. We were trying to find a Whole Foods, but the maps app on our iPhone took us to two wrong locations. So we gave up and headed towards the Pike Place Market area. We looked for a restaurant that would be fairly friendly to our diet, but since I don’t like seafood, we didn’t have a lot of luck. We settled on the Hard Rock Cafe – not the first thought you have for healthy food. We both ordered a burger with no bun or cheese and a salad. I’m sure there were some things in there not on our Whole 30 plan, but we finished that on Monday, so we did our best given the circumstances and our level of hunger. [Read more...]

28 Days Into The Whole 30 – Preparing For Day 31 And The Super Bowl

Four Weeks!  That puts us on Day 28 of our Whole 30 program today.  I honestly can’t believe it has been four weeks and that we finish the Whole 30 in two days. Is sure has been a crazy journey this far and until you stop and think about it (or talk with some friends) you don’t really realize how much changes.  Yeah, I’m excited to take some new measurements on Monday evening at Ed’s Gym and to get on the scales Tuesday morning to see how much weight and how many inches I’ve lost. (I’m not quite as excited to post the before and after pics – mostly because of the before ones). But that isn’t the only change I’m talking about.

Earlier this week I met with some of my former co-workers and they were laughing about how my diet has changed. They reminded me of how I would give people trying to eat healthy a hard time and found it really funny that I, Mr. Fast Food and King of anything deep-fried, can’t eat 98% of the items in Whole Foods. But what really got my attention was as I was talking, I was describing food in totally different ways. My focus wasn’t on who had the best burger in town, rather I was recommending new vegetables and my favorite type of apple. Before I never really paid much attention to what I was eating and how it made me feel. Now I’m talking about how I feel if I eat fruit too early in the morning. What Does A Kid’s Whole 30 Lunch Look Like?

Today I wanted to share with you how the kids’ lunch has changed while we have been on the Whole 30 program. While it was rough to initially make the switch, the kids are finally starting to catch on to the idea that when they eat healthy food, they think more clearly and have more energy throughout the day.

This is a picture of what I would typically pack in their lunches pre -Whole 30. Crackers, bagels, soup or ravioli. I actually thought I was doing a good job when I would give them hot food in their thermos on cold days : ).

Here’s what a kid’s Whole 30 lunch looks like for us. Now we fill them up with nuts, eggs, meat, fresh fruit and veggies. A hot lunch I’ve packed  is leftover chili – of couse it was Whole 30 friendly. Sustaining, healthy food for growing kids.

Signs This Mom Is Serious About Healthy Food

My kitchen has changed. Two weeks into our life-style change, I wanted to give you some visuals of how how it looks and functions now. Maybe this will inspire some other moms out there who may be holding out on making a healthy food-shift for their families due to the same reason excuse I did for so many years- convenience.

This is where my toaster once was. We used it daily to toast pop tarts or waffles for the kids to eat for a quick breakfast. This weekend I had Jeff move it out. I needed the counter space. It made a great spot for my crock pot. This is a picture of a YUMMY roast I fixed for Sunday dinner, minus the potatoes. Just pot roast, onions, celery, carrots, and peppers. [Read more...]

Whole 30 Week 2 Update and Food Pics

We are 2 weeks into the Whole 30 plan and I’m having a hard time believing we are halfway there. For the most part have done well. Each of the kids have had something at school from a friend that they shouldn’t have because they just forgot, but that has only happend once.  I’ve had a few pretty bad days and reached a point a couple days ago where I was ready to give it up. Your body and mind do some weird things when you take away what it is used to. We’ve all had moments when we’ve questions if this is worth it. But we all know we are starting to feel better, and I can feel my body shifting and know I’ve lost some weight and inches.

Two weeks in I thought it would be fun to give you a glimpse of the types of food we used to eat and what we are having now. I pulled some photos from my iPhone that we had posted to Facebook from the couple months prior to starting the Whole 30 (blog) and some from the past couple of weeks. It won’t be hard to tell where the change happened.  The great thing is we are still able to have some favorites on the plan, and we’ve learned to adapt a few recipes for special treats like our tortilla-less, cheese-less, breakfast burrito.
